It’s probably not the honor he was looking for, but an honor nonetheless.
Billboard magazine has named Daniel Powter the one-hit wonder of the decade. His hit single, “Bad Day,” rocked the top of the charts for five weeks back in 2006.
Billboard defines a one-hit wonder as any act whose follow-up song failed to make it into the top 25. It only actually looked at the years 2000-2007 as the groups from 2008 could still have a shot at the top 25.
“Bad Day” not only got plenty of radio airplay, it was also the song that American Idol used each week for the farewell montage that played following the elimination of each contestant. “Bad Day” also enjoyed massive popularity overseas. It was the most-played song in the U.K. from 2003 – 2008. In addition, a cover of the single opened the movie “Alvin & The Chipmunks.”
Powter, who is Canadian and has battled drug addiction and dyslexia, took a few years off after the success of “Bad Day.” He made a comeback last year with a new album, “Under The Radar,” which failed to repeat the success of “Bad Day.”
