In the wake of yet another massive publication of top secret, classified documents from the now-infamous WikiLeaks website, Congressman Peter King wants the site to be reclassified as a terrorist organization.
King, the incoming chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, says this newest data breach is “worse than a military attack.”
“I am calling on the attorney general and supporting his efforts to fully prosecute WikiLeaks and its founder for violating the Espionage Act,” he said.
He has already written a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to ask if the site could be reclassified.
“(The release) has put American lives at risk all over the world,” he said.
“This is worse even than a physical attack on Americans, it’s worse than a military attack.”
The Obama administration is now trying to implement some level of damage control following the publication of 250,000 top secret documents from embassies around the world.
Among the embarrassing cables that have now been released were revelations that Clinton had requested surveillance of several United Nations diplomats and that the Saudi royal family had encouraged an attack on Iran.
The good news is that, so far, the damage seems to be less than anticipated. The majority of the wrath is now being directed at WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. He is already facing rape allegations in Sweden and Australian authorities are trying to determine whether or not he broke any laws in releasing the information.
It also seems that the U.S. urged Australia to cancel Assange’s passport. That request has been denied by attorney general Robert McClelland.
