Is it the Conficker C worm or the Conflicker C worm? Actually, the correct spelling is Conficker, no “L”, but it doesn’t matter.
All that really matters is that you are prepared. The hype around the Conficker C worm has been tremendous. It has affected over 9 million computers, Microsoft has offered $250,000 for anyone who can stop it, there have been April Fools jokes about it, and even domain registrars are preparing for Conficker.
Still, the worst may be yet to come, according to Reuters and even Yahoo. Researchers are now warning the public that the Conflicker virus could still strike.
Also known as Downadup or Kido, the Conficker C worm turns infected PCs into zombies that respond to a remote server that now supposedly controls an army of computers.
Researchers warn that the Conficker (or Conflicker) masterminds are likely just waiting until the hype dies down a bit before they activate their new army of machines.
“I never thought it would happen April 1,” said Roger Thompson, chief research officer at AVG, an anti-virus company. “It might be tomorrow. It might be next week. It might be next month.”
Analysts say the Conflicker virus A.K.A. Conficker C worm garnered massive amounts of attention in recent days because of its enormous size. Most botnets like this have “only” a few million slaves. It was also given an extra popularity boost because it was supposedly going to deploy on April Fools Day.
So were we all the butt of a sick April Fools joke? Not likely. This thing very real.
Estimates vary widely at this point, but experts predict that tens of millions of computers are already infected without the knowledge of their owners.
