Being locked up inside a maximum security prison didn’t stop one of Britain’s most dangerous criminals from using Facebook to intimidate his enemies.

Colin Gunn, a criminal mastermind who ordered the killing of his own grandparents, was able to stay in touch with as many as 565 Facebook friends over the past two months.

Gunn is currently doing 35 years for conspiracy to commit murder.  He says prison officials gave him permission to set up a Facebook account, saying that it was his legal right.  Unfortunately, this also allowed him to continue running his organized crime ring from prison.

In one status update, Gunn, 42, says:

“I will be home one day and I can’t wait to look into certain people’s eyes and see the fear of me being there.”

In another message he says:

“It’s good to have an outlet to let you know how I am, some of you will be in for a good slagging, some have let me down badly, and will be named and shamed, f—– rats.”

Officials pulled the plug on his website on Friday after a local news outlet raised the red flag on the issue.

Jack Straw, the justice secretary, now says he will tighten the reins on Facebook use by prisoners. He says that social networking sites are forbidden in prison and and that Gunn didn’t have permission to start an account.

Gunn is just the latest criminal caught caught using social networking sites to coordinate criminal activity.

Just last week, it was discovered that Jade Braithwaite, who is in prison for stabbing to death Ben Kinsella, 16, used Facebook to intimidate the family of his victim.
