A German man was charged on Wednesday with trying to extort former model Cindy Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber for $100,000 over a picture of their daughter tied to a chair and gagged.
Edis Kayalar hasn't been arrested yet as he was recently deported to Germany. Authorities believe that he is in Stuttgart.
Kayalar, 26, was charged with one count of extortion. If he is convicted, he could be sentenced to up to two years in prison.
The photo was reportedly snapped by the couple’s ex-nanny earlier this year and depicts the girl, who was 7 at the time, tied to a chair wearing shorts and a tee shirt.
The daughter told her parents that the former nanny snapped the photo because they had been playing "cops and robbers," according to the official affidavit.
Kayalar stole the picture from the nanny and sought to get money from both Crawford and Gerber time and time again, starting in July.
“He believed he could have received $500,000 from the tabloids for the photograph,” the affidavit read.
Kayalar had been taken into federal custody for an immigration violation about three months ago and deported. He phoned Crawford and Gerber again on November 1 and said that he would release the photograph to the media unless they paid him $100,000.
Crawford and Gerber sent an e-mail to Kayalar with the FBI's assistance that said payment would be forthcoming later this week. No payment was sent.
Crawford’s spokeswoman Annett Wolf issued a statement saying:
“Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford intend to pursue any and all available legal action against anyone who aids the perpetrator in the distribution or sale of the photograph of their daughter.”
Cindy Crawford divorced actor Richard Gere in 1995. She Rande Gerber in 1998 and together they have two children.
