The Federal Aviation Administration is currently investigating an incident in which a child was heard giving instructions to pilots from the tower of one of the busiest airports in the U.S.
In a recording that FAA has confirmed as authentic, the child delivers five transmissions from John F. Kennedy International Airport. In each case, the pilots responded enthusiastically to him.
Here is the transcript of one of those conversations from JFK:
JFK TOWER: Jet Blue 171 contact departure.
PILOT: Over to departure jet blue 171, awesome job.
The child did appear to be supervised, as a controller explained the reason for the child’s voice to the approaching pilot as follows:
“That’s what you get guys when the kids are out of school. (laughter)”
JFK airport is currently sixth busiest in the nation with several thousand planes taking off and landing daily.
The control tower is one of the most secure areas in the airport and FAA says only licensed controllers are allowed to communicate with aircraft.
