charla nashSad news tonight for Charla Nash.

The woman who had one of her hands, her nose, her lips and both of her eyelids torn off by a friend’s pet chimpanzee, Travis, in 2009 has been denied both a face and hand transplant by the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, where the first U.S. face transplant was done on Connie Culp in 2009.

(UPDATE: Charla Nash finally got a face transplant)

(UPDATE 2: See the amazing results from Charla’s face transplant here)

Experts say that both transplants must be performed simultaneously and must come from the same donor. The Cleveland Clinic, though, has never done a hand transplant so this won’t be possible.

The hospital has released this statement:

“Due to the complexity of her injuries, the medical team has concluded she is not a candidate for transplantation at this time.”

Back in November, Nash, 56, went on The Oprah Winfrey Show to talk about her injuries and to reveal her face for the first time to the public.  Both of her eyes needed to be removed following the attack so Charla can no longer see. She also lost bits of her scalp and her jawbone.

Police officers shot and killed Travis the Chimp at the time of the attack.
