After a week of intense deliberations, the jury came back with an unanimous verdict that Google didn’t infringe upon Oracle’s Java patents.

“Today’s jury verdict that Android does not infringe Oracle’s patents was a victory not just for Google but the entire Android ecosystem,” Google said in an emailed statement.

The judge dismissed the jurors as well as the third phase of the trial, which would have covered damages if Google had been found guilty.

Earlier this month, a federal jury issued a partial verdict in the first phase of the case. That jury found that Google did infringe on Oracle’s Java patents, but it was deadlocked as to whether or not Google proved that its copying of Java was “fair use.”

Oracle filed a lawsuit against the search giant back in in 2010 over its use of the Java programming language and software tools.

Oracle acquired Java when it purchased Sun Microsystems in 2010.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has recently created a top secret surveillance unit with one ambitious goal: to invent technology that will allow police to more easily eavesdrop on internet and wireless communications.

The project has been in the works for quite a while now, and four years and $54 million later, the FBI is finally launching the National Domestic Communications Assistance Center (NDCAC).

TheNDCAC is a collaborative effort between the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). All three agencies will build customized hardware to enable wiretapping on wireless and internet conversations via Skype, VoIP, and any other wireless form of communication you can think of – per court order, of course.

It’s also going to function as a sort of a “surveillance help desk” for state, local, and other police. The center represents the technological component of the FBI’s “Going Dark” internet wiretapping push, which was allocated $54 million by a Senate committee.

The NDCAC isn’t saying much about what it’s overall purpose will be. One can only hope that it’s use for good and not for evil.

“The big question for me is why there isn’t more transparency about what’s going on?” asks Jennifer Lynch with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a civil liberties group. “We should know more about the program and what the FBI is doing. Which carriers they’re working with — which carriers they’re having problems with. They’re doing the best they can to avoid being transparent.”

Oh and this isn’t all the FBI is up to…they’re also working on an initiative to develop an automatic mass-monitoring computer application to analyze Facebook for crime-related comments.

Here’s the full official statement from the FBI regarding the NDCAC.

“The FBI along with other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies continue in their efforts to establish the National Domestic Communications Assistance Center (NDCAC).

“As you are aware, the rationale behind the NDCAC was outlined by the FBI’s then General Counsel Valerie Caproni in her February 2011 testimony and Chief Mark Marshall then President of the IACP before the House Judiciary Committee, Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security. As stated in their testimony, the NDCAC will have the functionality to leverage the research and development efforts of federal, state, and local law enforcement with respect to electronic surveillance capabilities and facilitate the sharing of technology among law enforcement agencies. Technical personnel from other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies will be able to obtain advice and guidance if they have difficulty in attempting to implement lawful electronic surveillance court orders.

“It is important to point out that the NDCAC will not be responsible for the actual execution of any electronic surveillance court orders and will not have any direct operational or investigative role in investigations. It will provide the technical knowledge and referrals in response to law enforcement’s requests for technical assistance.

“In passing the FY2012 Appropriations for Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies, Congress included $8,244,000 and 13 positions for the FBI to establish and operate a NDCAC. Working closely with other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, the FBI’s Operational Technology Division is leading the effort in establishing the NDCAC as outlined above.”

The carnage continues today as NASDAQ has been sued by an investor who claimed the exchange operator was negligent in handling orders for Facebook shares following its initial public offering, causing losses for investors.

A separate lawsuit has been filed against Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, IPO underwriters Morgan Stanley, and others alleging violations of securities laws.

Phillip Goldberg, a Maryland man, has filed a class-action lawsuit on behalf of all investors who lost money because NASDAQ delayed buy, sell, or cancellation orders for Facebook shares on May 18, the day the IPO went live.

A technical glitch delayed Facebook’s market debut by about 30 minutes and later delayed order confirmations.

NASDAQ CEO Robert Greifeld told investors at the company’s annual meeting Tuesday that “clearly we had mistakes in the Facebook listing,” but more than 570 million shares were processed on that first day of trading.

Goldberg filed his lawsuit yesterday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.

Separately, investor Darryl Lazar filed a proposed class-action lawsuit in California, alleging that Facebook’s registration and prospectus were materially false, according to a statement from plaintiff law firm Glancy, Binkow & Goldberg.

The consumer internet analyst at lead underwriter Morgan Stanley slashed his revenue forecast for Facebook in the days leading up to the social network’s IPO, and that information that may not have reached investors before the stock went live.

And so, one of the most highly-anticipated initial public offerings in history may also go down as one of the most flawed.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carried the unmanned Dragon capsule into space to meet up with the International Space Station during a 3:44 a.m. EDT launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, marking the first time a private company has sent a spacecraft to the ISS.

The mission is the first real test of NASA’s plan to outsource space missions to privately funded companies now the space shuttle fleet has been retired. SpaceX hopes to show NASA that its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsule are ready to haul cargo, and eventually astronauts, for the space agency.

“Today marks the beginning of a new era in exploration; a private company has launched a spacecraft to the International Space Station that will attempt to dock there for the first time,” said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden in a speech. “And while there is a lot of work ahead to successfully complete this mission, we are certainly off to good start.”

In a separate news conference, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk spoke at company headquarters in Hawthorne. It was there that SpaceX employees gathered, watched, and cheered as the Falcon 9 made its trek to the stars.

“There’s so much hope riding on that rocket,” he said. “When it worked … and they saw their handiwork in space and operating as it should, there was tremendous elation. For us, it’s like winning the Super Bowl.”

“Today we are releasing 1.7 GB of data that used to belong to the United States Bureau of Justice, until now,” reads an Anonymous press release. “Within the booty you may find lots of shiny things such as internal emails, and the entire database dump.”

Just in case there was any doubt, a DOJ spokesperson has confirmed that Anonymous did access a server that hosts the Department’s statistical data.

Anonymous released the data dump online via their usual torrent-based delivery system.

The Department of Justice hasn’t yet confirmed what data the hackers were able to access or when the breach took place. The Department of Justice is, however, looking into whether or not the hackers violated computer usage laws.

This Anonymous breach and data dump comes just days after an apparent Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack against the Chicago Police Department‘s website during this weekend’s anti-NATO summit protests.

Sure, Chrome has managed to eke past IE before in short bursts, but last week marks the first time Chrome was the number one browser for a sustained period of one week.

Exactly 31.88 percent of the world’s web traffic used Google Chrome, while Internet Explorer was a close second at 31.47 percent.

The browser trends below are expected to continue at least until the release of Internet Explorer 10 later this year. IE10 is tied in with the launch of Windows 8.

Grayson James Walker was born on February 15, 2012. He was born with Anencephaly, a rare birth defect whereby a baby is born without parts of the brain and skull.  The baby lived for just eight hours.

Heather Walker posted pictures to Facebook of Grayson without his hat on.

“Not long after, Facebook deleted them because of the content” she said. “They allow people to post almost nude pictures of themselves, profanity, and so many other things but I’m not allowed to share a picture of God’s beautiful creation.”

Walker and her Facebook friends decided to re-upload Grayon’s pictures as a form of protest, and she’s on a 24-hour ban.

Facebook does have rules about photos and content people may find offensive, including bullying, hate speech, graphic violence, nudity, etc.

Walker maintains that her photos of her newborn son don’t fall into any of those categories.

“I see all kinds of stuff, women’s body parts, almost nudity, which is one of their standards, people cursing each other out, just profanity,” said Walker.

Amazed at the amount of support she’s received from all over the country, Walker says the photo is raising awareness.

“Just in two days, all these people have messaged me telling me how much God has used Grayson’s life to touch them and to work in their hearts and to make them appreciate the children they have, that they have healthy children,” she explained.

Not all the feedback has been positive, though, and Walker says those people can friend her on Facebook at their own discretion.

“If you’re my friend and you want to see the picture then look at it, but if you don’t, just like any TV show or anything else you watch, if you don’t want to see it you don’t have to,” said Walker. “But I want to share this with people just like any other person wants to share their baby or their child.”

Zuckerberg and the 27-year-old Chan wed at a small ceremony at his Palo Alto, California, home this afternoon, just days after the long-awaited Facebook IPO.

Zuckerberg took the world’s largest social network public in one of the most anticipated moves in Wall Street history yesterday.

Chan graduated from medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, on Monday, the same day Zuckerberg turned 28 years old.

The couple met at Harvard University and have been together for over nine years.

Zuckerberg designed the ring featuring “a very simple ruby,” according to sources.

The ceremony took place in Zuckerberg’s own backyard in front of about 100 guests, who all thought they had all gathered there to celebrate Chan’s graduation.

Time to change that relationship status to “married,” Mark.

The first foray by a private company to launch a rocket into space was grounded, and the SpaceX rocket never made it off the launch pad.

The launch was aborted just 0.5 seconds before liftoff.

It was so close, in fact, that even NASA announcer George Diller was caught off guard.

“Three, two, one, zero and liftoff,” said Diller, who then realized the rocket was still on the launch pad.

“We’ve had a cutoff. Liftoff did not occur.”

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell blamed the failure on high combustion pressure in engine number five, one of nine engines needed for liftoff.

Onboard computers detected the problem, as they should, and shut everything down.

Engineers will now start the trouble-shooting process and hopefully fix the problem. They’ll switch out the engine if need be.

The next potential launch date is next Tuesday, May 22.

Despite everyone’s disappointment, Shotwell maintained, “This is not a failure. We aborted with purpose,” she said, “It would be a failure if we were to have lifted off with an engine trending in this direction.”

Absolutely. If the rocket had lifted off and then blown up in space, things would have been a lot worse. Today’s no-go was really for the best.

SpaceX is one of a number of private companies hoping to make it into space with the goal of eventually sending cargo and astronauts to the International Space Station for NASA.

NASA has paid $396 million to SpaceX for these test flights. It also has a $1.6 billion contract with the company for 12 cargo flights to the ISS.

SpaceX is the brainchild of billionaire Elon Musk, who made his fortune founding PayPal.

The stock’s price bounced around at first, several times falling back to $38 – but by 10 a.m. PDT / 1 p.m. EDT, it was back up to above $41, up about 8 percent.

As many people looked for a big first-day jump in Facebook’s share price, the single-digit rise was seen as a bit of a letdown.

“It wasn’t quite as exciting as it could have been,” said Nick Einhorn, an analyst with IPO advisory firm Renaissance Capital. “But I don’t think we should view it as a failure.”

The highly-anticipated Wall Street debut was held up for about 30 minutes after NASDAQ said it was “experiencing a delay.” It’s now being actively traded, however, and investors are now able to boost the company’s record $104 billion valuation even higher.

Facebook shares were being quoted at $45 on NASDAQ before trading began and Intrade, the online betting market, was predicting a 77 percent chance that the stock would close at $45.

Other social media companies weren’t off to a very good start today, though, as trading in Zynga was halted after the social gaming company’s stock dropped more than 13 percent, reaching an all-time low at $7.17.

Groupon also dipped by around 6 percent and LinkedIn was down more than 1 percent. The freeze on shares of Zynga, which was enacted by market circuit breaker that activates when trading gets volatile, was supposed to have lasted five minutes, but actually went on for much longer.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg rang the opening bell for the NASDAQ stock exchange at a stage that had been set up outside at the company’s Menlo Park headquarters.

Zuckerberg was joined on the stage by COO Sheryl Sandberg and dozens of other Facebook employees.

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) would like Saverin to pay up, or never come back.

In September 2011, Saverin “unfriended” the U.S. before the company announced its planned IPO, which will take place at the end of this week at $38 a share, making it the largest internet IPO ever.

The co-founder of the world’s largest social networking owns an estimated 4 percent of the company and stands to make a cool $4 billion when the company goes public.

Saverin would enjoy a heap of tax savings by becoming a permanent resident of Singapore, which has no capital gains tax.

At a press conference this morning, Sens. Schumer and Bob Casey (D-PA) unveiled the “Ex-PATRIOT” (Expatriation Prevention by Abolishing Tax-Related Incentives for Offshore Tenancy) Act in response to Saverin’s move, which they referred to as a “scheme” that would allow him to “duck up to $67 million in taxes.”

The senators call Saverin’s move an “outrage” and will discuss their plan to re-impose taxes on expatriates like Saverin, even after they flee the U.S. and take up residence in a foreign country. The proposed legislation would also impose a mandatory 30 percent tax on the capital gains of anybody who renounces their U.S. citizenship.

The plan would prevent individuals like Eduardo Saverin from ever reentering the United States again.

“Eduardo recently found it more practical to become a resident of Singapore since he plans to live there for an indefinite period of time,” Tom Goodman, Saverin’s spokesman, told Bloomberg in an email.

In 2011, 1,700 people renounced their U.S. citizenship.

In fact, he loves them so much he started his own company, 38 Studios, in 2006.

In 2010, the state of Rhode Island, as part of the RI Economic Development Corporation’s effort to create jobs in the state, offered 38 Studios a $75 million loan to move the company to their state.

Schilling, therefore, up and moved to Providence.

Now, Schilling has asked Rhode Island for help, prompting state leaders to consider whether the firm is viable enough to justify further investment.

Schilling briefed Governor Lincoln Chafee and the state’s Economic Development Corp. board in a closed-door session on Wednesday.

After the meeting, Chafee wouldn’t comment on what Schilling is seeking from the state. The governor said the question before state economic development officials was, “How do we avoid throwing good money after bad?”

Schilling declined to answer questions either, saying only that “My priority right now is to get back to my team.”

Concerns about the financial health of 38 Studios surfaced when the company failed to make a scheduled $1.1 million payment to the Economic Development Corp. on May 1.

The company released its much-anticipated first game, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, to strong reviews in February.

Today, the search giant announced that it’s getting one step closer to a sort of creepy, Skynet-like self-awareness by unveiling the Google Knowledge Graph.

Instead of focusing on keywords and strings of characters when you perform a search, Google will now focus on “concepts” and “relationships” – and searching will never be the same again.

Google will not try to understand what you meant by your query.

For example, when you search for “orioles,” you could be looking for information about the Baltimore baseball team, or you could be doing some research on birds.

Now, when you perform that search on Google, a new window will appear on the right side of your screen asking you which entity you meant. Click on one of those options, and your results will be filtered accordingly.

Google will now be able to understand that “orioles” is more than just a keyword, it’s also a baseball team, in the American League – and that Baltimore is in Maryland, which is in the United States.

As Google explains:

When you search, you’re not just looking for a webpage. You’re looking to get answers, understand concepts and explore.

The next frontier in search is to understand real-world things and the relationships among them. So we’re building a Knowledge Graph: a huge collection of the people, places and things in the world and how they’re connected to one another.

This is how we’ll be able to tell if your search for “mercury” refers to the planet or the chemical element–and also how we can get you smarter answers to jump start your discovery.

As Ben Gomes, Google Fellow, puts it, Google is basically switching “from strings to things.”

What’s interesting is that, with this new panel appearing on the right side of your screen, it’s not entirely clear where the Google ADS are going that usually appear over there. As advertising is the main ingredient in Google’s massive revenue structure, it will be interesting to see how they’re integrated into this new interface.

The Google Knowledge Graph will be rolled out to users gradually over the next few days and weeks.

It should become self-aware and try to take over the world sometime in 2013 (OK, we’re kidding about that part…or are we?).

By the time the company starts publicly trading on the NASDAQ (under the symbol “FB”), Facebook will be floating around 421 million shares. The company’s stock is expected to get its official pricing tomorrow (Thursday), and Facebook says it will be in the $35 to $38 per share range.

If the company’s stock gets priced at closer to $38, the Facebook IPO would raise over $16 billion and would become the largest technology public offering ever. AT&T Wireless, the current tech IPO leader, raised over $10 billion back in 2010.

The extra shares are coming from current Facebook investors Peter Thiel, Tiger Global Management, and James Breyer from Accel Partners, and not from Facebook itself – so the added shares won’t increase Facebook’s valuation.

Yesterday, Facebook added another $50 million shares to its IPO, with the caveat that they were part of an “over-allotment” option.
