Air travelers across the country were left changing their plans on Thursday morning as an FAA computer glitch wreaked widespread havoc on regional airports.

The Federal Aviation Administration now says that the glitch lasted for about four hours and was corrected by 9 a.m., but it's effects are still being felt by many travelers whose flights have been delayed or canceled.

The trouble began when a piece of networking equipment at a computer center in Salt Lake City crashed at about 5 a.m., according to an official FAA statement.

That kept air traffic control computers in other parts of the USA from communicating with each other. Air traffic controllers had to input complex flight plans themselves as they couldn't be automatically transferred from computers in one part of the country to computers in another, thereby crippling the entire system.

Two computer centers in Salt Lake City and near Atlanta were affected, along with 21 regional radar centers around the country.

Science fiction is one step closer to becoming reality.

A researcher at the NASA Ames Research Center has created a proof of concept gadget that can convert an ordinary, everyday iPhone into a chemical sensor capable of detecting ammonia, chlorine gas, and methane.

The device is about the size of a postage stamp and plugs right into the iPhone.  If it detects anything harmful, the chip actually uses the phone to alert others to the potential danger.

The gizmo was created as part of Homeland Security’s Cell-All program. The eventual hope would be to turn millions of cell phones into a giant "net" that could quickly detect hazardous chemicals in public environments.

Really, though, it's true importance is that it's basically a Star Trek tricorder.

A tricorder, for those who are unfamiliar, is a field device from Star Trek that can detect just about anything, life signs, minerals, oxygen levels of the surrounding air, etc, giving you a picture of what's around you.

This new NASA probe is fairly similar.  It's just the first of what is sure to be many efforts toward developing a portable device that can measure the world around you in a scientific way.

Currently, Homeland Security plans to utilize this new device as an anti-terrorist detection program, but in the not-too-distant-future we could see advanced versions helping us measure air quality or determine UV exposure.

This new tricorder could truly make science accessible to everyday citizens.

The Twitter phenom "Shit My Dad Says" is heading to TV.

CBS has signed on for a comedy show based on the popular Twitter account, which has grabbed over 700,000 followers since it was launched in August and has turned its owner, Justin Halpern, an internet sensation.

The creators of "Will & Grace, " David Kohan and Max Mutchnick, will serve as executive producers and supervise the writing for the comedy, which Halpern will co-write along with Patrick Schumacker.

The title of the show will obviously change if it makes it to the airwaves.

Halpern, 29, got the idea for the Twitter account after moving back in with his parents in San Diego.  On August 3rd, he debuted "Shit My Dad Says," a Twitter feed where he tweeted the random colorful ramblings of his 73-year-old father.

Some examples:

"Oh please, you practically invented lazy. People should have to call you and ask for the rights to lazy before they use it.";

"Why the fuck would I want to live to 100? I'm 73 and shit's starting to get boring. By the way, there's no money left when I go, just fyi"

Look for it to hit the airwaves soon, if it gets past the screen test.

Just when you thought Google couldn't possibly get any bigger, the company announced on Monday that it has agreed to acquire AdMob, a fast-growing start-up company that places advertisements on mobile phones, for $750 million in stock.

You've most likely seen AdMob advertisements on those free iPhone apps that you've downloaded.

Google says this acquisition will help the company accelerate efforts to delve deeper into the mobile advertising game, which is a rapidly growing market.

"We see mobile as a huge growth opportunity for us," says Susan Wojcicki, vice president of product management at Google. "We see an opportunity working with AdMob to really accelerate our efforts in an important industry for Google."

The deal is the third-largest in Google's history, behind the $3.1 billion deal for DoubleClick and the $1.65 billion deal with YouTube.

Founded in 2006, AdMob calls itself the "world’s largest mobile advertising marketplace."   Its headquarters are in San Mateo, California and it employs about 140 people.

It seems that the folks over at Google read Blippitt.  If you recall, yesterday we commented on the Big Bird Google Doodle and mentioned the following...

It's nice to see Google getting into the spirit of things, but personally, I would have liked to see Cookie Monster's eyes used in place of the "OO"s, but that's just me.

So today, imagine our surprise when we logged on to Google and saw the logo above.

It looks like Cookie Monster does, in fact, have "Googly eyes" after all.  How did he predict that over 20 years ago (see video below for details)?

So now the lingering question seems to be whether or now Cookie Monster will morph into Veggie Monster over the coming months.  The answer is simple.  No, he won't.  It's just a rumor that surfaced once Americans became more health-conscious, although he might not eat quite as many cookies these days.  There will be no Veggie Monster.

Thanks for reading, Google. Now if I could only get an invitation to Google Wave. :-)

Best Buy has announced the release of the Little Buddy Tracker to its Insignia product line. The Little Buddy Tracker helps you keep track of your child's location. All you need to do is drop this little device into their backpack or lunch box.

The Little Buddy Tracker then uses GPS and cellular technology to provide you with real-time location data using either your computer or smart phone. Parents just log on to the Insignia GPS Locator website and they'll see a map of their child's precise location.

On Wednesday night, Google OneBox was born. U.S. users are now one click away from listening to a full-length song in that you are now able to stream songs directly from Google’s results page.

Google OneBox will let users stream songs directly from the Google search results page and will also include additional information such as tour information and even music videos.

Users can search by artist name, album title or song title and can even find a song by entering in portions of its lyrics.

The new box mashes down other search results, such as the artist's home page and fan site, and reduces what Google refers to as "time to result," which means how much clicking is needed to hear a song.

Now, when you enter a music-related query — like the name of a song, artist or album — your search results will include links to an audio preview of those songs provided by our music search partners MySpace (which just acquired iLike) or Lala. When you click the result you’ll be able to listen to an audio preview of the song directly from one of those partners. For example, if I search for [21st Century Breakdown], the first results provide links to songs from Green Day’s new album. MySpace and Lala also provide links to purchase the full song.

Many times, though, you don’t know the name of the song or the artist who sings it. Maybe you remember only the chorus — or maybe you remember who sang it, but you forgot the exact name of the song. If you’ve ever heard a catchy song in a car or cafe, but just can’t figure out the name of the song, you’ll know what I’m talking about. This search feature also helps you find many of those songs by entering a search containing a line or two of lyrics. So if I search for [static silhouette somehow], I’ll get results for Phoenix’s song "Rome."

VEVO, the YouTube for music videos, has landed a big investor.  Abu Dhabi Media Company has purchased a stake in the venture from owners Universal Music and Sony.

The details haven't been made public, but sources indicate that the joint venture is now valued at about $300 million. YouTube will end up sharing some of the revenue in exchange for letting VEVO take advantage of its enormous distribution network.  VEVO will exist both outside of and within YouTube as its own channel.

The site is set to launch near the end of this year.

Microsoft's marketing department has been putting in some overtime this month, it seems.

The company has taken a bizarre approach to promoting Windows 7 in Japan. Burger King locations there have launched the "Windows 7 Whopper".

To match the software theme, the Windows 7 Whopper features seven patties stacked in a Whopper bun and measures 5.1 inches tall. It is also priced at 777 yen ($8.53).

Only 30 customers per day can take advantage of the 777 yen price. Each customer thereafter will pay 1,450 yen ($17.10).

The new Barnes & Noble nook eReader is here and it's ready to compete with Amazon's Kindle.

The nook eReader is sleek. It measures 7.7- x 4.9- x 0.5-inches and weighs in at just 11.2 ounces. The nook eReader features a 3.5-inch color touchscreen, which supports swipe-to-browse books and color covers. The rechargeable battery takes about 3 & 1/2 hours to fully charge and it will last for about ten days if you remember to turn the device off when not in use.

We first wrote about Spoofcard back in May. Now,the popular caller ID spoofing service has released its own iPhone app.

Spoofcard allows you to call someone and alter the caller ID so that it appears you are calling from a different phone number.  It's great for making prank calls when you don't want to get busted.

It looks like the gloves are off in the smart-phone wars.  Verizon's new Droid commercial has hit the airwaves and it does a pretty good job at pointing out all of the things the iPhone can't do.

All those things, by the way, are things that "Droid Does".

The commercial doesn't actually show the Droid phone, but it does take a swing at those cutesy iPhone commercials by incorporating some campy music and making fun of all the things your iPhone can't do.

Coupled with the new "There a Map for That" commercials, it looks like the war is on.
