The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) signed off on the first new nuclear reactors since 1978 yesterday.

Atlanta-based Southern Company can begin to move forward with a pair of Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear reactors at its Vogtle nuclear station near Waynesboro.  The NRC voted to approve the project, clearing the way for the commission to issue a combined license for the operation and construction of the reactors.

The AP1000 is one of a new breed of pressurized-water reactors equipped with passive safety features that are designed to prevent overheating in the event of a power loss like the one that occurred at the Fukushima plant in the wake of the Japan earthquake. The new reactors also have sturdier designs that are meant to better withstand quakes and plane crashes.

“Today marks an advancement in our nation’s energy policy,” Southern Company chief executive Thomas Fanning said at a press conference. “The project is on track, and our targets related to cost and schedule are achievable.”

The 5-member NRC voted in favor of the licenses 4-to-1, with Chairman Gregory Jaczko dissenting.

Jaczko said the new licenses don’t go far enough in requiring the builders to incorporate lessons learned from the Japanese nuclear disaster last year.

There are currently 104 operating nuclear reactors at 64 plants across the U.S. Half of those are over 30 years old.

The first thing you’re likely to notice about the Tesla Model X are its unique “falcon wing” rear doors. Instead of opening to the side, as regular minivan doors often do, these “falcon wing” doors open upwards instead, resembling the wings of a bird when they’re open.

The doors feature a double hinge so that they take up less horizontal space when opening, which comes in handy in tight spaces.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says the doors give the Model X the largest door openings of any passenger car.

The Tesla Model X features seven seats and storage space in both the rear trunk and the front trunk, and it is touted to handle much like a sports car. The Model X accelerates from 0 to 60 in 4.4 seconds, which is fairly impressive for an electric vehicle.

The Model X is said to be priced similarly to the Model S ($50,000 to $70,000) and will have a slightly lower electric driving range than the Model S, which comes in 3 options – 160 miles, 230 miles, and 300 miles.

Musk says he doesn’t expect the Model X prototype to change very much in its looks and design when it reaches production. Most changes would be done simply to improve aerodynamics. The car keeps many of the design elements of the Model S, although with a slightly higher roof-line.

Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen says he tried to design the car so as not to look too masculine or feminine.

The Tesla Model X is set to enter production in 2013, with sales beginning in 2014.

The new video shows a live woolly mammoth, an animal the scientists say has been extinct for thousands of years, crossing a river.

The “jaw-dropping” footage was allegedly filmed by a government-employed engineer last summer in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug region of Siberia.

Many are already calling the video a hoax, as the man who posted the piece, a paranormal enthusiast named Michael Cohen, has been involved with several other videos of UFOs and other unexplained phenomena that are of questionable authenticity.

The video is also quite short, a mere 10 seconds. If someone had actually seen a woolly mammoth, don’t you think they would have kept filming a bit longer?

To me, it just looks like perhaps a baby elephant crossing a river.

We know scientists want to clone a woolly mammoth in the near future, but I don’t think we’re quite there yet.

“We have collected over a thousand so far and we have only just begun,” said Denise Feiber, Public Information Director for Florida’s Division of Plant Industry.

Officials aren’t exactly sure how the slimy little buggers managed to slither into town, but they’re on a mission to eradicate the snails as quickly as they can.

Giant African snails can grow to be up to 8 inches and eat at least 500 different types of plants. They also destroy stucco and plaster.

“They leave excrement all over the sides of houses. They’re very nasty,” Feiber said. “These things are not the cute little snails that you see.”

They also pose quite a nasty health risk as they carry a parasite that can cause meningitis in humans.

Officials knew they had a problem on their hands last week when two sisters notified a fruit fly inspector during a routine check.

“A homeowner came out and said, I found these snails in my yard and she had one of them. He recognized it as potentially being one of the giant African snails,” Feiber said.

So far, officials have been focusing on the one-square-mile area around the home in southwest Miami. They are only 30 percent done with their probe and have already discovered there to be more than 1,100 snails.

“We have gone back to some of these positive properties and cleaned up every one of these snails we have seen,” Feiber said. “We come back a few days later and we’re collecting more and more.”

The giant African snails are asexual, meaning they contain both male and female reproductive organs, and they usually typically lay 1,200 eggs per year.

One affected resident said the snails seem to be multiplying “faster than rabbits.”

“It’s amazing, there were literally hundreds in my yard,” she said. “I saw them within a month and a half just take over my yard.”

The odd little creature was discovered by Percy and Connie Emert in Jeresey Shore, Penn. on Sunday.

“We have bird feeders out in our yard, and the squirrels are constantly into them,” Connie said.

“My husband traps them and then sets them free elsewhere so they don’t get into your bird feeders.”

She said she had seen the little creature on the property before, but no one would believe her, including her husband.

“I kept telling my husband I saw a purple one out in the yard. ‘Oh, sure you did’ he kept telling me,” she added. “Well, he checked the trap around noon on Sunday and sure enough, there it was.”

The Emerts plan to release the squirrel back into the wild. As for why he is purple, no one seems to know.

Some say the creature must have fallen into some paint, or perhaps got into some printer cartridges.  Some even say he might have fallen into a Port-A-Potty.

What we DO know is that the purple squirrel has its own Facebook page, and is even tweeting:

The simple explanation, of course, is that the purple squirrel is simply a die-hard Ravens fan.

It’s often an amazing transformation. How do they DO that? Is the product that’s being advertised really responsible for this magnificent metamorphosis?

One blogger has created a viral video to “expose” the mystery behind those before and after photos. Furious Pete set out to dispel the illusion, and he does it all in less than five hours. He does the “after” shot first, hitting the gym and pumping up his biceps, triceps, and pecs to make sure he is “as vascular as humanly possible.”

He also takes a trip to the tanning bed to get “as tanned up as possible” to “show off that vascularity.”

He then advises going home and setting up some “really good lighting in your basement.” Then he sprays himself with cooking spray and explains that just before you take the photo, you should do a few more bicep curls to add a “toned look.”

To prove that all this is taking place in less than five hours, Furious Pete shows his laptop computer screen to verify the date and time of the video, “January 29, 2012, 6:22 p.m.”

Then, he prepares for the “before” photo by eating canned Beefaroni, soda, chips, and chocolate milk. When he is nice and bloated, he shows his computer screen again, this time showing that it’s still the same date, but it is now 10:25 p.m.

In the end, Furious Pete makes his final point, saying that he just wanted to “show that anything is possible in the world nowadays” and “don’t believe everything you see with your eyes.”

So far, the video has been viewed more the 3 million times, having been featured on both Yahoo News and the front page of Reddit!

The effort is part of NASA’s new Integrated Design Project (IDC).

The space agency plans to invest $300 million to $500 million into each of the companies chosen under new 21-month partnership agreements, said Ed Mango, manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew program, at an industry briefing at the Kennedy Space Center.

With the space shuttle fleet being retired in 2011, Russia currently corners the market when it comes to flying crews to the ISS, a $100 billion orbiting research laboratory.

Russia charges NASA approximately $60 million per person for rides to the station, which orbits about 240 miles above Earth and is staffed by rotating crews of six astronauts.

Winning companies would have until May 2014 to finish their integrated designs, with the goal of then testing out the “space taxi” by the middle of the decade.

The test ships should be capable of carrying at least four people, Mango said.

Since 2010, NASA has invested a total of $365.5 million in private companies, including $130.9 million in Boeing, $125.6 million in Sierra Nevada Corp, and $75 million in Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX).

Boeing is developing a CST-100 capsule that could fly on an Atlas 5 rocket. SpaceX, which is already flying cargo to the station for NASA, plans to upgrade its Dragon freighter and Falcon 9 rocket.

Sierra Nevada is developing a winged vehicle called the Dream Chaser that sort of looks like a mini space shuttle. Like Boeing’s spaceship, it too would launch aboard Atlas 5 rockets, which are manufactured and sold by United Launch Alliance, a Boeing-Lockheed Martin partnership.

“If we have multiple partners, we think the most we might be able to give them in the long term might be something along the lines of $400 million per partner,” Mango said.

NASA explained in a press statement that the aim of IDC is “to outsource our space station transportation so NASA can focus its energy and resources on deep space exploration.”

NASA hopes to be able to fly its astronauts on its commercial space taxi by 2017.

Boisjoly was the Morton Thiokol (now ATK) aerospace engineer who warned about the severe cold conditions on the day of the infamous launch in 1986, and the impact that the cold would have on the O-rings in the space shuttle’s Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs).

Boisjoly died on January 6 after a long battle with cancer. He warned of the dangers of attempting a launch with temperatures as low as they were on January 28, 1986. As you know by now, he was overruled.

After the Challenger explosion and the resulting Rogers Commission, Boisjoly found himself shunned by coworkers and he eventually resigned.

Challenger’s final mission, STS-51L, was comprised of Commander Francis “Dick” Scobee, Pilot Michael J. Smith; Mission Specialists Ron McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnik, and teacher-in-space Christa McAuliffe  - as well as Payload Specialist Greg Jarvis.

The final Challenger mission lasted just 73 seconds before hot gases emanating from one of the solid rocket boosters punctured the large, orange external tank causing the shuttle to explode.

Although his coworkers may have turned against him, Boisjoly will always be remembered for his efforts to put shuttle crew safety ahead of launch schedules.

After leaving Thiokol, he become a speaker for workplace ethics and, in 2010, he donated numerous notes and papers that he had accumulated during his time with the aerospace firm to Chapman University in Orange, California – where it will be made available to the public.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, two daughters and eight grandchildren.

According to local reports, five cranes were needed to lift the dead mammal, which reportedly measured over 40 feet long and weight between six and seven tons.

Reports said the whale shark washed up dead near the pier after being spotted apparently unconscious about 100 miles away 10 days ago.

The whale shark’s dead carcass was reportedly sold for 1.7 million rupees, or more than $17,000.

Whale sharks are the world’s largest fish, often growing to 40 feet or more in length. Typically found swimming in warm, tropical waters, whale sharks are generally docile creatures.

Still, longtime fisherman Allan Amanse says getting too close to a whale shark might not be such a great idea.

“Whale sharks are really amazing animals. They are very gentle. But people should remember that they are wildlife animals and feeding them could pose more harm than good,” Amanse says.

This isn’t the first time Karachi beach has welcomed such a massive dead creature. Last September, a 25-foot-long dead whale washed ashore at Karachi beach attracting many spectators.

The newborn, named Chun Chun, was born in the city of Xinxiang which is in China’s Henan Province. The baby has broken the record for the heaviest baby ever to be born in China.

Chun Chun was delivered via caesarean section (thank goodness!) which hospital officials said lasted about 20 minutes on Saturday.

Mother and toddler 15.5-pound baby are resting and doing just fine, according to doctors.

Mother Wang Yujuan, 29, apparently informed the local media that this second pregnancy felt much different than her first pregnancy with Chun Chun’s big sister, who weighed a mere 8.8 pounds at birth.

“I clearly felt that my body was more clumsy than when I had been pregnant with my daughter. My belly was bigger than it was then,” Wang said.

She continued, “I guessed the baby would be between 10 and 11 pounds. I never expected to hear that he weighs 15.5 pounds.”

The boy’s father, Han Jingang, said his wife didn’t do anything differently while she was pregnant with their son. He was ecstatic when she gave birth to “such a big, fat son.”

“Today is the first day of spring in the Chinese calendar and he’s a ‘dragon baby,’” Han told reporters. “I feel very happy.”

The three previous record holders each weighed in at 15.4 pounds.

The heaviest birth in recorded history was documented by Guinness World Records and belongs to a baby boy born in 1879 in Ohio.

That baby weighed 23 pounds 12 ounces at birth but, sadly, the child died 11 hours after birth.

Scientists have discovered huge patches of ancient seagrass in the Mediterranean Sea that are thought to be up to 200,000 years old!

The researchers used DNA sequencing at 40 different sites over a span of 2,000 miles, from Spain to Cyprus, to determine the age of the grass, according to New Scientist magazine.

The study, published in the journal PLoS, revealed that the newly-found organisms ranged from 12,000 to 200,000 years old, with most of them clocking in at about 100,000 years old.

Weighing approximately 6,000 tons and stretching out for some 10 miles, the patches of seagrass reproduce asexually and spread very slowly, eventually covering vast spans of the ocean floors.

Despite the seagrass’ uncanny ability to survive in harsh conditions, scientists say the organisms may be declining, mostly due to climate change.

“If climate change continues, the outlook for this species is very bad,” said Professor Carlos Duarte from the University of Western Australia. “The seagrass in the Mediterranean is already in clear decline due to shoreline construction and declining water quality and this decline has been exacerbated by climate change.”

A strange illness that’s been producing bizarre, Tourette‘s-like symptoms in a more than a dozen girls there is now also affecting a 36-year-old. She’s now experiencing the same mysterious tics as the teens.

Marge Fitzsimmons, a nurse practitioner who lives near the school says, “It started out with sudden head jerks in the middle of October,” Fitzsimmons told NBC News, the tics occasionally interfering with her ability to talk.

Her symptoms got so bad she had to leave her job working with developmentally disabled patients.

“The motor tics wouldn’t stop, and the vocal tics started, and I went to one of the bosses and said I have to go.”

She hasn’t been able to work in two months.

Fitzsimmons says that sometimes the tics are sporadic. Other times, she can’t control them at all.

She’s been through a battery of tests, including a CAT scan, with no answers revealed yet.

“When it first started I thought maybe I’m going crazy,” she said. “As an adult, I can’t imagine these teenagers going through this and for anyone to think that they’re faking it at all. Try living a day in their shoes.”

Some experts think the illness could be a form of “conversion disorder,” or mass hysteria.  Fitzsimmons has accepted this diagnosis, only “because that’s what gets me out of the bed every day. That is my answer.”

Conversion disorder, or mass hysteria, “occurs in small groups, especially girls in schools in small towns,” according to Dr. Laszlo Mechtler, vice president of the Dent Neurological Institute in Buffalo, New York.

“What happens is that one individual – the so-called index case – may have a neurological disorder,” sayd Dr. Mechtler. “And then all of a sudden several other ladies have similar symptoms.”

Is it really possible that mass hysteria is to blame for this bizarre case, or is there something else going on here.

This extremely rare two-faced black cat, named Harvey Dent after the Two-Face character from Batman, was born healthy and cuddly in Port Charlotte, Florida this week.

Naturally, the kitten’s owners, Nash Hand and his wife Amanda Forsythe, were stunned.

“[She said] ‘What are you talking about? What do you mean two faces?’ I said it has two faces! This cat has two faces!” said Hand.

Forsyth said the kitten had four eyes, two tiny mouths, and two noses – all fully functional.

“They simultaneously work together, the two faces,” Forsyth said. “When he eats on one side it looks like he is eating on the other. When he meows it comes out of both sides.”

The couple turned to Craigslist for help on what they should do with their unique kitty, but they got quite the opposite.

Forsyth said people told her to kill the cat, calling it a “beast” and an “abomination.” Forsyth, though, plans to raise the kitten despite those concerns.

Two-faced cats, called “Janus cats” after the Roman who had two faces, aren’t born very often and have the odds stacked against them due to health problems.

There are plenty of cases of Janus cats living long, healthy lives, though.  In fact, the oldest of the two-faced cats is almost 12 years old, according to Guinness World Records.

We all know there are your standard, garden-variety amphipods, known to be mostly tiny shrimp-like crustaceans that thrive in aquatic environments around the world, but now there are “SUPERGIANT” amphipods, which can be up to 10 TIMES larger and look like hell-spawn!

British scientists made the astounding discovery accidentally while participating in a joint expedition with New Zealand scientists to investigate the depths of the Kermadec Trench, north of New Zealand.

Using a large metal trap outfitted with cameras, they were hoping to haul up a species of deep-sea snailfish that hadn’t been captured in over than 60 years.

Instead they pulled up seven milky-white amphipods measuring up to 11 inches long! They look more like lobsters. Remember, ordinary amphipods hardly exceed 1 inch.

Dr. Alan Jamieson, from the University of Aberdeen‘s Oceanlab, said on the facility’s website, “The moment the traps came on deck we were elated at the sight of the snailfish as we have been after these fish for years. However, seconds later, I stopped and thought, ‘What on earth is that?’ It’s a bit like finding a foot-long cockroach.”

Jamieson added: “The surprising thing is that we have already been to this deep trench twice and had never come across these animals before. In fact a few days after the discovery we deployed all the equipment again on the same site and we didn’t photograph or capture a single supergiant; they were there for a day and gone the next.”

As I said in the headline, dear God, man, please KILL IT WITH FIRE!

Now all we really need is a supergiant bowl of cocktail sauce.

His Garnier limb – which was invented in collaboration with other enthusiasts as an open source project of sorts – can support up to 8,000 pounds and allows treehouse builders to create stronger dwellings in the trees.

When Garnier, who owns a treehouse resort with 9 elevated dwellings, elected to build his own home for himself and his wife Peggy, it also had to be nestled among the branches.

His home is 1,800 square feet on three floors. He calls it the world’s largest treehouse (not a fact, though he challenges anyone to prove him wrong).
