You can tell a TV show is doing something right when a fictional character hits the mainstream and becomes an instant icon.  CBS has pulled off just such a feat, with one of its characters going viral on Google, Twitter and the like.

On Monday, the show How I Met Your Mother introduced a fictional character by the name of "Lorenzo Von Matterhorn," played by Neil Patrick Harris. They created the character as an alias to Barney in an attempt to pick up women.

Lorenzo Von Matterhorn even his own page on Wikipedia page before it was deleted. Before it was deleted, it read as follows:

“Lorenzo Von Matterhorn was born somewhere in Switzerland in the spring of 1974. The exact date and circumstances of his birth are unknown since he was immediately placed in a basket and tossed in a river. Young Lorenzo rode the pristine Alpine glacial melt waters for hundreds of miles until a young Milanese woman discovered the basket along the banks of the river Po. Some say it was this first early journey to Milan that fueled both his love of exploration and fashion. The woman would raise Lorenzo Von Matterhorn as her own, naming him Lorenzo after her father and giving him the surname Von Matterhorn to reflect his Swiss heritage as well as his uncommonly large penis.

“Shortly after his family moved to New York City in the late 70’s, Lorenzo began rescuing stray puppies and other cute animals. As someone who had been abandoned himself, Lorenzo Von Matterhorn recognized both the pain of loneliness as well as the power of hope. One evening, while nursing a particularly cute Cocker Spaniel back to health, Lorenzo noticed the rest of his brood howling in unison. Curious as to their abilities, he spent the next several months developing their voices and then entered them as a musical act in a local festival under the name DOG STEVENS. They took first place, and went on to become one of the most successful animal musical acts since The Beatles.”

To keep the hype going, Neil Patrick Harris joined Twitter as well, and managed to grab 33,000 followers in seven hours.

The Atlanta Falcons' Tony Gonzalez is a vegan.

The sure-to-be-Hall-of-Fame-bound tight end is taking drastic measures to demonstrate that his lack of meat doesn't affect his performance.  Tony and his wife, October Gonzalez (yes, seriously), are appearing nude for the latest round of PETA anti-fur PSAs.

Tony states that he and his wife "have changed many of our habits in light of the inhumane treatment of animals that occurs not only in the fur industry but also on factory farms."

“We have a voice. And that’s why we’re doing something like this…If enough people stand up and say something about it, it will end,” Tony says.

Heads up, parents. A Maclaren Stroller recall is set to be announced on Tuesday by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

A report from by ABC News indicates that in excess of 1 million strollers will be recalled by the company due to issues with children getting fingers caught in the strollers.

Model numbers have not yet been released, but the recall could affect strollers made as far back as 1999.

Apparently, there have been several reports of children getting their fingers caught in, or even amputated by, the hinges on the strollers.

An official press release will be forthcoming on November 10 from the CPSC.

Maclaren will also be shipping out special kits to owners of the strollers to help prevent these injuries.

Ah, Black Friday.  That annual event where a mass of humanity emerges pre-dawn from their caves and goes off into the wilderness, hunting for that bargain to end all bargains.

It may still seem a little early, but Sears and Target are already getting ready for Black Friday 2009.

Black Friday is the nickname traditionally given to the Friday after Thanksgiving.  It signals the beginning of the holiday shopping season.

Officially, Black Friday isn't a holiday, but but many people do have the day off.  Black Friday is famously known as the busiest shopping day of the year.

This is only partially true, however.  People do go out in droves, but in terms of actual sales volume it usually ends up ranking somewhere between the 5th- and 10th-busiest day of the shopping year.

Sears will start its Black Friday 2009 sales this week with a "door buster" sale.  Sears is offering a wide variety of so-called "door busters" each week until Christmas with the hope that eager shoppers will come early and often.

We bloggers certainly know that the FTC is now cracking down, but we didn't expect the first victim to be Disney.

The company is now offering a full Baby Einstein refund of $15.99 to anyone who bought one of the DVDs between the dates of June 5, 2004 and Sept. 4, 2009.

Consumers can also exchange the DVDs for Baby Einstein books, music or a 25 percent off coupon.

Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood asserts the Baby Einstein refund is the result of a Federal Trade Commission's reaction to the CCFC's claims in 2006 as to the effectiveness of video education methods.

The refund may also reflect recent research, which shows that the Baby Eintein series is not only ineffective but could even be considered detrimental.

The Baby Einstein website states:

To participate, you must have purchased a Baby Einstein DVD between June 5, 2004 and September 4, 2009.

Microsoft's marketing department has been putting in some overtime this month, it seems.

The company has taken a bizarre approach to promoting Windows 7 in Japan. Burger King locations there have launched the "Windows 7 Whopper".

To match the software theme, the Windows 7 Whopper features seven patties stacked in a Whopper bun and measures 5.1 inches tall. It is also priced at 777 yen ($8.53).

Only 30 customers per day can take advantage of the 777 yen price. Each customer thereafter will pay 1,450 yen ($17.10).

Clothing designer Kirstie Kelly has expanded her offerings beyond simple Disney wedding dresses, as she has now designed an entire line of Disney wedding rings as well.

The new line, dubbed the "Kirstie Kelly for Disney by Mouawad," represents Kelly's first venture into the universe of fine jewelry design. The line debuted Tuesday at the Intercontinental Barclay Hotel in New York as part of the annual Bridal Fashion Week.

The new line consists of six elegant rings with matching wedding bands.

Each ring and its matching band were designed to match the essence of one of six Disney princesses, including Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, along with more modern additions Princess Jasmine from Aladdin, Ariel from The Little Mermaid, and Belle from Beauty and the Beast (ring pictured above).

The Disney wedding rings will sell for about $1,200 - $6,000.  They will be available at retailers throughout the U.S. and also through the Mouawad web site.

Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, hero of the ill-fated flight 1549 that he landed in the Hudson River, has also landed a $3.2 million two-book deal with HarperCollins' William Morrow imprint.

Sullenberger, who just recently returned to the air, will write a memoir that discusses that miraculous U.S. Airways landing and a book of "inspirational poems."

The deal was negotiated by agent Jan Miller. Former Publishers Weekly editor Sara Nelson revealed the news on The Daily Beast.

Earlier this week, Sully used a magazine column as his book proposal.

Here's some snappy commentary from the article:

"Yes, it's official: The book world has gone crazy ... This is the kind of book deal a publisher makes in order both to make a balance sheet work--the $3.2 million goes down on two different lines, for two different titles, and thus each book 'only' has to earn back half of the total--and also to humor a would-be author or, in this case, poet."

Crazy, isn't it?  What's even crazier is that I'll probably read it.

The official Twilight Twitter account has arrived. At this point, it's still unverified, although it does seem to be legit as it's currently broadcasting tweets from director Chris Weitz.

Verizon Wireless has launched a bold new TV commercial attacking AT&T's iffy 3G coverage in a very clever way.

Using Apple's now-famous "there’s an app for that" tagline which is seen in iPhone ads (which uses AT&T's network exclusively), Verizon manages to do a pretty hilarious spoof by stating "there's a map for that" when promoting its extensive 3G network coverage.

Verizon's new commercial compares its cellular coverage to AT&T's using a map that floats in a thought bubble over a Verizon user who is walking down the street:

If you wanna know why your 3G coverage works so well on Verizon Wireless – there’s a map for that!

The ad closes with the statement that Verizon has five times more 3G data coverage than "the nation’s #2 wireless company."

Yahoo kicks off its new global advertising campaign on Monday and part of that campaign is a new television ad.

The new commercial will run on all major broadcast channels plus cable networks like AMC, ESPN, USA, Comedy Central and Bravo.

Advertising has done wonders for Bing, which has already made up significant ground in the market share battle. It will be fun to see whether or not advertising on television can save what's left of a struggling Yahoo.
