Ready for the ultimate in green energy? If you watched 60 Minutes last night, you possibly caught a glimpse of the future.

The Bloom Box is a small, block-shaped power supply. Two of them can power your average American home, according to K.R. Sridhar, founder of Bloom Energy, who was on the popular news magazine program last night.

The original technology is derived from an oxygen generator that was originally meant for a scrapped NASA Mars program.  The technology has been ported into a private fuel cell (albeit, with the help of an estimated $400 million in private funding).

Bloom Energy's design pipes oxygen into one side of the cell while fuel is supplied to the other side to create the chemical reaction necessary for power.

Fun fact: a stack of 64 cubes can power a small business like Starbucks.

In case you were wondering, several businesses are already using Bloom Boxes for energy. The corporate-sized cells have been installed at places like FedEx and Wal-Mart.  In fact, Google was first on the scene, using Bloom Boxes to power a data center for the last 18 months. Ebay has also installed boxes on the front lawn of its San Jose location.

Wow, is this a hot looking plane or what?

Boeing's highly anticipated new 787 Dreamliner made its its first flight today after passing all of its functional tests. The 787 Dreamliner is sure to be the new plane of the stars, promising to be one of the world's most fuel efficient planes.

It is made of carbon and titanium, reducing fuel consumption as well as maintenance costs. The Boeing 787's first flight should last about four hours while her two pilots kick the tires and see how the new plane operates.

The goal of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is to be able to fly long distances without stopping to refuel, a revolutionary innovation which will reshape the aviation industry as we know it.

Howard Wheeldon, a transport analysis for BGC Partners says, "This is an aircraft that changes the whole basis of flying, because of the equipment on board," he said. "In terms of the cost of operation this is an 80% composite material aircraft, with 35 tonnes of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic, so it is a light aircraft - which means it burns less fuel."

Boeing's rival, Airbus, also has a lightweight, revolutionary new aircraft in development. It's plane will consist of carbon-composite materials.

Bottom line, if you're going to join the mile-high club, this is the plane to do it in.

Remember Alicia Silverstone? The popular 1990's actress who starred in films like "Clueless," has just released her feel-good cook book and diet plan called "The Kind Diet."

"I've been on this journey for 11 years," Silverstone said in a recent interview. "I started to glow, and people were like, 'Why do you look so great?' I felt so much better, and I used to take an asthma inhaler and I used to get allergy shots —and all that stuff went away. And my skin got great. So what I found was at first, I thought this was good karma," she added.

Alicia Silverstone thinks the ideas in "The Kind Diet" can even help bring about world peace, even though she knows that sounds a little bit crazy.

"I really believe that, and I know it sounds naive, but I really think its naive to not give that a shot," she said. "What I'm really trying to do is give you all the most valid information available in a really concise, fun way. I tried making it a really fun conversation."

With the steps outlined in "The Kind Diet," Silverstone hopes everyone can feel as happy as she does. "My secret agenda is to make people happy and feel good, and that's really my agenda," she said. "I know deeply in my heart it's a better way, and people will feel so magical if they do it. ... I have the secret drug."

A ban on the selling of traditional incandescent light bulbs began across most of Europe on Tuesday as the continent tries to get people to save energy.  Even those who advocate the decision think that the change could be problematic.

Under the light bulb ban, stores won't be able to buy or import incandescent glass bulbs beginning on Tuesday. Retailers can, however, sell their current inventory until it is exhausted.

Newer compact fluorescent light bulbs are hailed as being more economical down the road as they use about 80 percent less energy and last much longer than traditional light bulbs.

They are more costly, however.  One compact fluorescent light bulb can can run $14 or more where traditional bulbs cost about 70 cents each.   E.U. officials are adamant that the energy savings over the long haul would more than make up for the higher cost of the new bulbs.

At a Monday press conference in Brussels, however, those same officials also found themselves dealing with more serious questions about health risks stemming from the mercury found in the new bulbs.

The U.S. will also have to deal with these issues as incandescent light bulbs are set to be phased out beginning in 2012.

White House environmental adviser Van Jones resigned on Saturday following several weeks of controversy surrounding his past activism.

Van Jones was the White House special assistant for "Green Jobs", a position formerly known as "Color of Change" . A few weeks ago, "Color of Change " campaigned against Glenn Beck. They, in fact, led a boycott against the Glenn Beck show that wound up being quite successful.

The Obama Administration then chose to distance themselves from Van Jones after Glenn Beck initiated a media campaign of his own, exposing some questionable political views that Van Jones publicly acknowledged.

"On the eve of historic fights for health care and clean energy, opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign against me," Jones said in a statement announcing his decision to resign. "They are using lies and distortions to distract and divide."

He continued: "I have been inundated with calls -- from across the political spectrum -- urging me to 'stay and fight.' But I came here to fight for others, not for myself. I cannot in good conscience ask my colleagues to expend precious time and energy defending or explaining my past. We need all hands on deck, fighting for the future."

Jones made two public apologies recently...one for signing a petition that questioned whether Bush administration officials "may indeed have deliberately allowed 9/11 to happen, perhaps as a pretext for war." The other was for using derogatory language when referring to Republicans in a speech he gave before joining the Obama administration.

GM has announced that its new Chevy Volt electric car should get about 230 mpg in city driving.

The new Chevy Volt is now at the forefront of Government, er, General Motors' efforts to breathe new life into a brand that has ceded market share in the USA, with 25 new cars due to be debuted between now and 2011.

At that mpg rating, the Volt would obliterate any competition, even the Toyota Prius. It should also help GM bolster it's new, greener image, a key component of the auto firm's restructuring initiative.

The Chevy Volt is set to launch next year, and the new mileage rating reflects new guidelines set by the EPA for electric cars.

GM's CEO Fritz Henderson stated at a media event the auto maker is still on track to have positive net cash-flow in 2010 and should be posting a net profit by the year 2011.

The Chevy Volt price is expected to be around $40,000 with buyers eligible for a $7,500 tax credit.

Now you see it, now you don't.

Just four days after the program was launched, the cash-for-clunkers program has already used up its entire $950-million budget, sending the Obama administration into a frenzy trying to scrounge up additional funding to avoid a shutdown.

Administration officials informed Congress on Thursday night that the plan would be suspended at midnight, causing confusion among many of the nation's car deals as well as car buyers. Many dealers are currently scrambling to submit paperwork on pending trades.

Administration officials are not willing to say what will transpire should no additional funding be uncovered by Friday. A spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has stated that lawmakers "will be working with the congressional sponsors and the Administration to quickly review the results of the initiative."

Calls to suspend Cash for Clunkers program came after auto dealers warned the government that it could very well lose track of how many trade deals had been made. The program was intended to run as long as there was money left in the $950-million budget, which left dealers wondering if the funds would run out before they were reimbursed for their deals, which would then necessitate junking of the clunker.

Tonight, the Discovery Channel aired an amazing documentary on the Houston Dome project. The country's fourth most-populated city faces real environmental danger from heat, hurricanes, and several other natural disasters.

So is the solution a giant dome encasing the city?  Some seem to think so.  No, this isn't The Simpsons Movie revisited, this is a REAL idea.

The proposed Houston Dome would have massive doors that could be closed to insulate the city from hurricanes and other inclement weather.  A concrete foundation ring 3.1 miles around would then anchor the dome deep into the ground.

The Houston Geodesic Dome would have a surface area of over 21 million square feet, making it the biggest structure with the largest roof on the planet.  More than 369,000 narrow steel struts would form the frame and almost 75,000 of them would have to fail before the dome would become unstable.

Rather than use regular glass, engineers would use a lightweight plastic called ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene). The material weighs just 1 percent as much as glass, it will not shatter, it can be fixed easily and it would gently drift back down to earth if it happens to come loose from the dome’s frame.

At the highest point of the Houston Geodesic Dome, hinged panels could be opened to ventilate the city, clear humidity or pollution and reduce the load on the dome's air filtration systems.

Large, helium-filled air ships would be used during the construction of the dome to help hold its shape until the structure is complete.  Just one of these fuel-efficient ships is able to stay aloft for hours and carry a 4,100-pound payload.

This thing is just too amazing to imagine, although, Houston is hot enough.  One has to wonder how ridiculously hot it would be under a dome!

Google has decided once again to take drastic measures to make the world a greener place.

This spring, instead of using their usual fleet of mowers to trim the fields at their Mountain View headquarters, they've hired some goats from California Grazing to do the honors.

It seems that every so often a herder will bring around 200 goats to the campus and they will proceed to mill about for a week eating grass.  Added bonus: they will fertilize the grass too!

The herd of goats is going to run them about the same price as using the lawn mowers would have.  The goats are herded with the aid of a border collie named Jen.

What does PETA think of all this?  They don't seem to have a problem with it, as long as the goats are treated properly.  Amy Cook, an Assistant Marketing Manager at PETA had this to say:

PETA has no problem with letting goats do what goats want to do (e.g., look cute and eat weeds), but we do have concerns about how the goats may be transported, whether they are provided with access to shelter during storms and shade as well as water during hot weather, where they are housed when they aren’t “working,” what kind of veterinary care they receive, and what becomes of old and/or excess goats. PETA has found over and over that whenever animals are used by a business to make money, corners are cut and animals often suffer as a result. And that really gets our goat, if you’ll pardon the pun.

Is Google up to the task? Well, in response, Niki Fenwick, a Google representative, says this:

Google takes the wellness of our employees very seriously and we pride ourselves on having a responsive and adaptable culture. The lawn-mowing goats are not, of course, full-time Google employees - but we would certainly respond directly to any concerns about their treatment. I can confirm that during their time in Mountain View, like other Google employees, each goat is entitled to a free organic lunch.

Well, this is one of the more bizarre stories to come from Google in quite a while. Let's hope they're not "kidding".

Today, April 22, is Earth Day 2009. The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, when about 20 million people participated across the USA.  Earth Day has grown into a world-wide phenomenon, with more than one billion predicted to take part in Earth Day 2009.

So why April 22?

Rumor has it that Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 because that's the birthday of Vladimir Lenin, the founder of the Soviet Union.

"Lenin's goal was to destroy private property and this goal is obviously shared by environmentalists," the Capitalism Magazine Web site stated in a 2004 story perpetuating the theory.

Kathleen Rogers, president of Washington, D.C.-based Earth Day Network, laughs at this communist-laden theory.

In fact, she says that April 22, 1970, was chosen for the first Earth Day simply because it fell on a Wednesday, the best day to encourage a huge turnout for the environmental rallies held nationwide.

"It worked out perfectly, because everybody was at work and they all left," she said.

In fact, the April 22nd celebration of Earth Day began as an environmental "teach-in" that first occurred in 1970 and was founded by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson.

Other influential people in the early days of the ecology movement of the 1960s and early 1970s that led to Earth Day include Rachel Carson, author of the bestseller "Silent Spring," and consumer advocate Ralph Nader.

Today, with much more intense focus on issues like climate change and toxic pollutants, Earth Day and Earth Week festivities are growing like wildfire and take place in numerous communities and countries around the world.

Get ready for Earth Hour.  It happens on Saturday night.

Cities world-wide are expected to participate, shutting off the lights to raise awareness for energy conservation.

Unlike last year, however, Google.com will not "go dark" this year.  You see, computers use the same amount of energy, regardless of the color that the monitor may be displaying at the time.  Besides, the dark screens were apparently confusing to some.

Google has been taking energy matters very seriously over the past year, however.  Here are just a few of the things the company has done:

• Remodeled their San Francisco office to achieve a Gold rating by the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Green Building Rating System
• Their engineers are working on a tool called Google PowerMeter that will show consumers home energy information almost in real time, right on their computer

• This past fall, they compiled tips and tricks to help users save energy
• Their summit on plug-in vehicles in Washington was standing room only, with policy, technology, and energy experts all discussing an electric vehicle future

Google will continue its greener efforts throughout the year, as should you.  So turn out the lights on Saturday night.  It's more fun in the dark anyway.

Pamela Anderson is speaking up against cruelty to animals, sort of.

Her latest publicity stunt for PETA involves a photo of the busty actress wearing nothing but a bikini - made out of lettuce.

Have you heard of "Do It Yourself Hot Water"?  It’s a away that you can use solar energy to slash your hot water heating bill. Depending on your water usage, that could cut your electric bill by 33%.

Since this current administration’s energy czar thinks electricity rates are TOO LOW and wants to raise them to pay for more Green Power, you can see that if slashing your electric bill by 33% now makes good sense, then doing this down the road will be a no-brainer.

So let’s say you learn for yourself about “Do It Yourself Hot Water” and you find you have a knack for this.

Here’s my question - do you think you could make a profit for yourself by buying the components at a discount (like a garage does car parts) and then selling them at retail while adding an installation fee?

It may not be a full time job (or might be) but I guarantee when people see YOU installing a “Do It Yourself Hot Water” system, they are going to be curious.

When you tell them how much it saves on the electric bill and that you are thinking about installing these units for other people, then you may have a new home business on your hands (even if they just buy the components and you earn the retail mark up while you build your skills, you can get the referrals you need to make more money when you have this “down to a science”).

“Do It Yourself Hot Water” COULD be a great way to help people SAVE MONEY monthly while you MAKE MONEY!

OK, so far Google know what websites we visit thanks to Google Chrome, they want to know our heart rate (Google Health), they want to know exactly where we're located (Google Mobile), sure, why not tell them how much power you're using too.

As strange as that may seem, Google has announced Google Powermeter, a service that will allow you to track your power usage.

The package comes with a green twist:

Google’s mission is to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful,” and we believe consumers have a right to detailed information about their home electricity use…

Specifically, to provide both consumers and utilities with real-time energy information, homes must be equipped with advanced energy meters called “smart meters.” There are currently about 40 million smart meters in use worldwide, with plans to add another 100 million in the next few years….

In addition to policy advocacy, we’re building consumer tools, too. Over the last several months, our engineers have developed a software tool called Google PowerMeter, which will show consumers their home energy information almost in real time, right on their computer. Google PowerMeter is not yet available to the public since we’re testing it out with Googlers first. But we’re building partnerships with utilities and independent device manufacturers to gradually roll this out in pilot programs. Once we’ve had a chance to kick the tires, we’ll make the tool more widely available.

This seems like an interesting idea. Pretty soon, I guess Google will be able to predict earthquakes too.

Last fall, Google posted information about the efficiency of their data centers and said that they would update this information roughly every quarter. They have now collected data for the 4th quarter of last year and published them.

For tracking purposes, they have been keeping records on the efficiency of any Google data center with an IT load of at least five mega-watts and a time-in-operation of at least six months.

In the fourth quarter, Google's average power and cooling overhead in these facilities was 16 percent, bringing the overhead for the trailing 12 months to 19 percent.  That figure was at 21 percent in the third quarter, so clearly at least SOME progress is being made.

It's a lot of technical mumbo-jumbo for sure, but for comparison's sake, a recent Environmental Protection Agency report put the overhead of the average enterprise data center at 100% (or higher).

Google is at least trying to be a greener company, which is respectable.  It will be interesting to see how these figure progress as the weather warms up over the spring-time, as that is when most efficiency ratios explode.

If you're like me and these things make you worry about yourself and your family, you should really read "Go Green - Be Rich!".
