UPDATE: Semenya has been cleared to return to Track and Field.
Caster Semenya, the South African 800m champion whose gender has been in question as of late, is indeed a hermaphrodite. He / she has both male and female organs.
Caster Semenya has no womb or ovaries, but instead has internal testes, the male sexual organs which produce testosterone, making her / him a hermaphrodite.
These new test results can, in effect, strip Semenya off her medals and are sure to cause quite a commotion between the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and the South African Athletics Federation.
Caster’s family and a multitude of South African politicians had come to her defense, calling the media both “racist and sexist” for insinuating that the runner looked masculine. In addition, the 18 year-old had recently received a major makeover to look more feminine on the cover of South Africa’s You Magazine (pictured at right).
