No one knows where Casey Anthony is, but this much is certain – on January 2, 2013 she’ll be in court.
For several days now, investigators have been anxiously waiting outside Anthony’s Florida residence to serve her with a subpoena in a defamation action filed by a woman named Zenaida Gonzalez.
“Our investigation team had her whereabouts pinned down,” says Gonzalez’s attorney, Matt Morgan. “Their backs were against the wall, so her attorneys said that they would accept service on her behalf.”
Gonzalez filed the lawsuit over Casey Anthony’s comments in 2008, indicating that a babysitter named Zenaida Gonzalez had kidnapped Anthony’s 2-year-old daughter Caylee Anthony, who later turned up dead. There was no babysitter by that name, but Gonzalez – who has nothing to do with Anthony – is claiming defamation because the two names are the same.
While Anthony has been hiding since her acquittal on murder charges, the defamation case has proceeded. A judge has ordered that Anthony’s attorneys must disclose her whereabouts.
For now, though, one of Casey’s criminal attorneys, Cheney Mason, will accept the subpoena on her behalf and give it to her himself – meaning that Casey’s whereabouts will remain a secret from the public.
Morgan says his client is happy, though, that Anthony will be appearing in court.
“Yesterday was a great day for us because it gets to show America that Casey Anthony is not going to get special treatment anymore and it stopped yesterday because now she is going to be held accountable. She is going to have to sit there and look Zenaida in the eyes, and tell her what she did,” Morgan said.
Morgan said Gonzalez is not seeking money.
“All she wanted to see was the system work, Zenaida works hard for her money for her family. She is not expecting millions of dollars, she want to see justice and she wants to see justice work the way it’s supposed to and so she is happy,” Morgan said. “This is the first time she will be in a courtroom where she will potentially have to answer questions about what happened. ”
