F My Life: It's Funny, It's True, Except When It Happens to You
Bryant Gumbel announced on Tuesday that he had cancer surgery about two months ago to get rid of a malignant tumor on his lung.
Gumbel, 61, was acting as a guest host on Live! with Regis and Kelly. He was filling in for Regis Philbin who has just undergone successful hip replacement surgery.
Gumbel said that he kept the details of his surgery private and that a portion of his lung was removed during the surgery. His doctors now hope that his treatment is finished.
"We had told a few people, we told my family, obviously," Gumbel said. "I even kept it from my staff at Real Sports. So I'm okay for the time being."
Gumbel said that he will see his surgeon again next week.
"I'm hoping they green-light me to play golf again," he said.
Gumbel hosts Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel on HBO. Previously, he had spent 15 years co-hosting NBC's Today Show.
Gumbel has smoked a few cigars in his day. CNN President Jon Klein even presented him with a humidor when they were at CBS together in the 90s to commemorate the launch of Gumbel's show, Public Eye.
