UPDATE: In a shocking move, Favre has come out of retirement – again.

We’ve heard this song before. Something tells me he means it this time, though.

Brett Favre informed the Minnesota Vikings officials on Monday night that he will retire rather than play in the 2010 NFL season.

Favre, 40, who has repeatedly said that wasn’t sure whether or not he would play this season, should be making a public statement later today.

The Vikings are hoping that Favre will change his mind, but coach Brad Childress said after today’s practice that Favre hasn’t yet told him of his intentions, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune.

“This is a very fluid situation,” Childress said, adding that he had spoken with Brett within the past 24 hours.

Favre had surgery on his left ankle back in May and last month, he said he just couldn’t decide if his body could take a 20th NFL season.

Brett’s been down this road before.  He retired from the Green Bay Packers in March 2008 but returned in July and was traded to the New York Jets.

He called it quits again early in 2009, but made a comeback last season with the Vikings.

Favre would make about $13 million from the Vikings if he plays this season.
