reds cardinals brawl 08102010

It was a wild one last night as the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals mixed it up in a bench-clearing brawl.

After making a few incendiary comments about the Cardinals, Reds’ second baseman Brandon Phillips tapped Cards’ catcher Yadier Molina with his bat as he entered the batter’s box.

That didn’t go over so well and the benches emptied, resulting in the ejection of managers Tony LaRussa and Dusty Baker.

Molina had this to say in a post-game interview:

“He talked bad about my team, he talked bad about me.  Don’t talk bad and come up and say ‘hi’ to me. That’s stupid.”

So what exactly were those Brandon Phillips comments that set this thing off?

“I’d play against these guys with one leg. We have to beat these guys. I hate the Cardinals. All they do is bitch and moan about everything, all of them, they’re little bitches, all of ‘em. I really hate the Cardinals. Compared to the Cardinals, I love the Chicago Cubs. Let me make this clear: I hate the Cardinals.”
