Guess what? Bounce Rate is more important than you thought.
Let’s back up for a second. What is Bounce Rate? Here is Google’s official answer from their Analytics Support page…
“Bounce Rate: Bounce rate is the percentage of single-page visits (i.e. visits in which the person left your site from the entrance page. Bounce rate is a measure of visit quality and a high bounce rate generally indicates that site entrance (landing) pages aren’t relevant to your visitors. You can minimize Bounce Rates by tailoring landing pages to each keyword and ad that you run. Landing pages should provide the information and services that were promised in the ad copy.”
Today, SEO Blackhat seems to confirm that Bounce Rate is a pretty hefty factor when it comes to SEO and ranking.
It should come as no surprise that Google doesn’t mention Bounce Rate at all in their recently released Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide. Hmm.
What’s the bottom line? Once visitors find your site, keep them there. Put up a relevant video. Use a “Popular Posts” box. Just don’t let your visitors “bounce” too quickly.
