Last week it was the Ark of the Covenant making headlines. This week it's Blessed Francis X. Seelos.
The Archdiocese of Baltimore is going to investigate whether or not an Annapolis woman's cure from cancer was a miracle, a possible step toward sainthood for the 19th-Century priest.
Mary Ellen Heibel had been treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital back in 2004 and early 2005 for several cancerous tumors in her lungs, liver, stomach and chest. After she was diagnosed, Heibel started praying to Blessed Francis X. Seelos. She urged others to pray also.
Heibel, whose cancer was indeed terminal, experienced a miraculous recovery that her doctors simply cannot explain. She continues to pray to Seelos, who served in Maryland before dying in Louisiana trying to treat yellow fever victims.
The Archdiocese of Baltimore will begin the investigation in a few weeks. This is only the fifth time such an investigation has been launched by the Archdiocese.
