NFL Super Bowl Commercial 2011

Another Super Bowl has come and gone, and the buzz the next day once again focuses on the commercials.  Advertisers pay millions of dollars to reach the Super Bowl audience, and for good reason.

Watching the annual Super Bowl commercials has become almost as important as tuning into the game itself.

This year, there were some hits and misses.  There was that bizarre Stella Artois commercial that, frankly, left me scratching my head.  There was Joan Rivers popping up in a GoDaddy.co commercial.  There was even another sign of the coming Apocalypse when Ozzy Osbourne and Justin Bieber appeared together in a Best Buy commercial.

Of course, we also got our obligatory look at a few new movies like “Thor“, “Rio“, “Fast Five“, “Cowboys & Aliens“, “Captain America“,  and the next installment in the “Pirates of the Carribean” saga.

5. CareerBuilder “Parking Lot Monkeys” Commercial

We’ve all felt a little like this poor guy at various times in our lives, not only behind the wheel but also in our jobs.  Kudos to CareerBuilder for putting together a very entertaining spot.

4. Doritos “Pug Attack” Crash the Super Bowl 2011 Winner

The winner of the Doritos “Crash the Super Bowl” contest came up with this commercial involving a Pug, a bag of Doritos, “Dies Irae” from Verdi’s “Requiem”, and some slapstick super-slo-mo hilarity.  The winner got a $1 million bonus plus a guarantee to create a spot for next year’s Super Bowl as well.

3. Darth Vader “The Force” Volkswagen Commercial

When I was a kid, I always wished I could “use the Force” to make my vegetables disappear, clean up my room, etc.  This little guy trying to make things happen in his Darth Vader outfit while the “Imperial March” was blaring was too cute.  It was both funny and heart-warming to see the dad humor him a bit at the end.

2. Eminem’s Chrysler Commercial

Eminem.  Detroit.  “Lose Yourself”.  The Chrysler 200.  Enough said.

1. NFL: “Best Fans Ever” Commercial

Who knew that this year’s best Super Bowl commercial would come from the NFL itself.  This was easily the most impressive Super Bowl ad of the year.  I’d love to know how long it took to put this together.  It featured characters and clips from all your favorite old TV shows (Seinfeld, The Simpsons, Cheers, The Brady Bunch, Alf, Happy Days, The Supranos, The Dukes of Hazzard, you name it) wearing their favorite team’s colors.  It’s nice to see that the creators of this spot did their research and put Brenda from Beverly Hills 90210 in a Vikings jersey (she and Brandon were originally from Minnesota).
