In an effort to compete with giant online retailer Amazon, Best Buy has launched a new initiative called Best Buy Remix, offering developers an open API and the potential to link directly to their product catalog.
Anyone that has their own site or blog can apply to become a Best Buy affiliate, similar to the Amazon Associates. Then, if you get approved, you get a small percentage of the sales made through their site.
Best Buy aspires to become the Amazon of electronics (good luck with that). To help ensure that they do it properly, Best Buy has teamed up with Mashery, a company that also works with LinkedIn, Compete, and Netflix, to help manage the API.
It will be interesting to see how Best Buy handles this launch. It could either make or break them in the online sales world.
