BCS National Championship 2012No. 2 Alabama won the 2012 BCS national championship last night with a 21-0 romp over top-ranked LSU, behind a dominating defense and five field goals from kicker Jeremy Shelley.

The Crimson Tide pitched the first shutout in Bowl Championship Series title-game history at the Superdome in New Orleans.

It also was the first shutout in the 14-year history of BCS bowl games.

It was the second BCS crown for Alabama, which won in 2009, and the school’s 14th national title overall. Nick Saban became the first coach ever to snag three BCS crowns, winning two with Alabama after getting his first with LSU back in 2003.

The Southeastern Conference claimed its sixth straight BCS title and eighth overall.

“This defense is built on stopping them, and that’s what we did,” said Courtney Upshaw, the game’s defensive MVP. “We wanted to come out and show the world we beat ourselves the first game. We wanted to come out and dominate from start to finish, and that’s what we did.”

Shelley tied a bowl record with five field goals and the defense did the rest.

The Tigers had beaten eight ranked teams, including Alabama, to establish itself as the clear number one seed going into the bowls, but in the end, LSU didn’t quite live up to the hype.
