A 26-year-old man has been charged today in connection with throwing a banana on the ice toward a black National Hockey League player during a pre-season game last Thursday.
Chris Moorhouse of Ontario was issued a summons on a charge of engaging in a banned activity under the province’s trespassing act. Moorhouse now faces a fine of up to $2,000.
During a game-ending shootout last week in the exhibition game, Philadelphia Flyers player Wayne Simmonds skated toward Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jordan Pearce when a banana was tossed at the black Simmonds.
“It was unfortunate that this incident happened but I am above this sort of stuff,” Simmonds said. “This is something that is obviously out of my control.”
