Sheila Dixon Resigns
Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon entered an Alford plea to one count of perjury and pledged to tender her resignation effective Feb. 4 as part of an agreement settling the active criminal cases against her.
The plea means that Dixon acknowledges that prosecutors had enough evidence to find her guilty of charges related to not disclosing gifts from a developer doing business with the city.
Under an agreement between defense attorneys and prosecutors and agreed to by Judge Dennis Sweeney, Dixon will be sentenced to up to four years of unsupervised probation, and will be required to perform 500 hours of community service. Dixon must also contribute $45,000 to charity.
The agreement means that City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake will become mayor.
