Bacon Belly Bomb – Viral Effect Began on Twitter

Just when I think I have seen it all, along comes the Bacon Explosion (AKA Bacon Belly Bomb). When bacon meets the internet, magical things are bound to happen.

Two Kansas City competition barbecuers guys have found themselves atop the bacon mountain thanks to a recipe calling for just two main ingredients: two pound of bacon and two pounds of Italian sausage. The sausage is encased in a blanket of bacon. Oh, and there is more bacon inside along with some sweet Kansas-City-style sauce.

Once you have assembled this death trap, you smoke it in a backyard smoker. Aaron Chronister and Jason Day, who compete in barbecue circles as Burnt Finger BBQ, decided to call this bacon H-bomb the “Bacon Explosion” AKA "Bacon Belly Bomb".

The Bacon Belly Bomb has literally exploded - no additional marketing required, this thing has now taken on a viral life of its own. First it exploded online. Did we mention that Chronister is an Internet marketer? That always helps.

Then, on Wednesday, it was featured on the cover of The New York Times’ food section.

The Bacon Explosion recipe is now featured on their website (of course) at www.bbqaddicts.com. It has attracted 510,000 page views since it was posted just before Christmas. In fact, it received 90,000 hits on Wednesday alone.

We have to give them credit for really working the internet angle on this one. Chronister’s brilliant move was posting about the Bacon Belly Bomb on Twitter. His 1,200 “followers” took the reigns from there. It's still hot on Twitter - see here.

He also gave it some pre-viral love on StumbleUpon. The recipe became so hot on SU that the Bacon Belly Bomb went straight to the site’s front page.

Other sites, such as Digg and Del.icio.us, also helped the Bacon Explosion recipe go viral. There’s now a Bacon Explosion fan page on Facebook. On YouTube, you can see grills bursting into flames when the Bacon Belly Bomb log almost literally explodes (see videos below).

So how bad for you is the Bacon Explosion? The entire meat log contains about 5,000 calories and roughly 500 grams of fat. Looks like these guys need to start looking into the benefits of Acai Berry.
