Finally!  MMS is coming to the iPhone!

What, you’re not a fan of The Rock?  OK, fine, here’s the deal in plain English.

The long-awaited MMS service is almost here for iPhone users everywhere, with just days left before the official launch on Friday, September 25th.  In the meantime, AT&T is currently bulk-texting iPhone users and preparing them for the big day.

The text message states that owners of the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS will be able to use the MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) this coming Friday.  Here is the message:

AT&T Free Msg: Picture & Video messaging (MMS) will be available for iPhone on 9/25. While we prepare your account for MMS capability, the current “view my message” experience will be turned off but your ability to send and receive text messages will not be affected.

In addition to sharing images, video clips, and voice notes via MMS, the iPhone OS 3.x allows users to exchange address book contacts and geographical locations from the Maps app.

Any supported item will have the ability to be sent via MMS to other users who have devices with MMS capabilities (not just the iPhone).

The current iPhone FAQ indicates that MMS will be offered at no additional cost to iPhone customers who have subscribed to a text messaging bundle.

It’s important to note, however, that the first-generation iPhone doesn’t support sending or receiving MMS due to hardware deficiencies.
