“As The World Turns” Canceled after 54 Years

CBS has given the soap opera As the World Turns the axe after more than 50 years on the air.

CBS has said that the last episode will be broadcast in September, 2010 in the show’s 54th year. Daytime soap operas have been tanking for years and CBS also nixed the soap Guiding Light earlier this year.

Throughout its many years, Marisa Tomei, Meg Ryan, Parker Posey and James Earl Jones have appeared on the daytime drama.

This move will leave CBS with just two soaps: The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful.
