The driver of a Toyota Prius in New York told police that the car accelerated all by itself, then took off down a driveway, across a street and straight into a stone wall.
The ’05 Prius was driving forward on Tuesday down a long driveway with a putting green next to it, when the accident occurred. The 56-year-old housekeeper driving the vehicle was not injured.
“The impact with the wall was pretty substantial,” said Harrison police Capt. Anthony Marraccini.
The air bags deployed when the car struck the stone wall of the estate across the street. Rocks, glass, and other debris were thrown about 10 feet from the wall.
Police are still investigating the incident, but Marraccini says the floor mats don’t seem to have been a factor. The vehicle had already been serviced by Toyota and the floor mats were secured.
He says the driver was lucky she didn’t collide with traffic as the car sped across the street.
The car’s owner, Joseph Leff, said his housekeeper had been behind the wheel, although he failed to identify her or say whether she was back at work.
“She’s a wonderful driver,” said Leff. “It’s not her fault. It’s the car.”

The car was being kept in a police parking lot on Wednesday. The front end was severely pushed in, the hood was damaged and the front bumper was broken.
Leff has called Toyota but has not yet heard back from them.
On Monday, California police stopped a runaway 2008 Prius going nearly 85 mph after the driver said the pedal jammed.
Toyota has recalled more than 8 million vehicles in the U.S. to address gas pedals that can become sticky or trapped under floor mats, drawing scrutiny from Congress and federal regulators.
