anna nicole smithThe FBI reportedly investigated whether Anna Nicole Smith participated in a plot to murder her then-tycoon husband’s son, with whom she was embattled for his late father’s empire. In the end, prosecutors ruled that there wasn’t sufficient evidence to charge Smith, who died of a drug overdose in 2007.

The former Playboy Playmate’s FBI records show that she was investigated back in 2000 and 2001 as part of a murder-for-hire plot involving E. Pierce Marshall. Marshall fought to keep Smith from collecting his father’s fortune, valued in the hundreds of millions. The younger Marshall died in 2006 of natural causes.

The files were just recently released under the Freedom of Information Act and reveal that the investigation continued even as the battle continued surrounding J. Howard Marshall II‘s estate.

It’s hard to be exactly sure of what the FBI learned, as large pieces of the released files have been whited out and there is no actual evidence of her involvement in the plot.

Authorities initially interviewed Anna Nicole Smith on July 3, 2000. When informed why she was being questioned, “Smith began crying and denied ever making such plans,” a report said.
