Actor Andrew Koenig, who had been missing since February 14, was found dead on Thursday in a park in Vancouver. His father says he committed suicide.
“My son took his own life,” said Walter Koenig at a press conference held in the park this evening.
The former Growing Pains star’s body was discovered by friends who organized their own search of Stanley Park, where Andrew often enjoyed walking.
Koenig’s parents reported their son as missing after he failed to board a flight to Los Angeles from Vancouver last week.
Walter Koenig, who is known for his role as Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek series, flew to Vancouver with his wife, Judy, on Tuesday to take part in the search effort.
“He was obviously in a lot of pain,” Walter said of Andrew, who was 41 years old.
The Koenigs say they got a letter from their son last week in which he sounded “despondent.”
Andrew had stopped taking medication for depression about a year ago, according to his father.
