Andrew Gallo, the construction worker who killed Los Angeles Angels rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart and two of his friends in a drunk driving crash on April 9, 2009, has been convicted of murder.
This was the second DUI conviction for Gallo, 23, who held onto some rosary beads and glanced up at the jurors as they read their verdicts.
“What this case has shown is that the accelerator, the gas pedal on an automobile in the wrong hands is as dangerous as the trigger on a gun,” said Nigel Pearson, father of victim Henry Pearson, 25, outside the courthouse. “And in the wrong hands, it can devastate the lives of many, many people.”
UPDATE: Andrew Gallo has been sentenced to 51 years to life in prison
Gallo was found guilty of three counts of second-degree murder and single counts of drunk driving, hit-and-run driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol and causing great bodily harm.
He now faces 50 years to life in state prison. His sentencing will take place on December 10.
Jacqueline Goodman, Gallo’s attorney, says they plan to appeal the ruling.
“I think it’s tragic,” she told reporters. “I think there’s been a miscarriage of justice.” She has previously stated that her client didn’t intend to kill anyone.
