Green Day is planning on storming Broadway.

After lots of speculation about its future, the rock musical version of “American Idiot” will be hitting Broadway in spring of 2010. The show will start to preview at Manhattan’s St. James Theatre on March 24 and have its official opening on April 20.

The Broadway version of the show will be directed by Michael Mayer, who took a Tony award for his work on “Spring Awakening”.  The show will tell the story of love, loss and war first presented in the band’s breakthrough 2004 CD “American Idiot”. It will highlight songs from that album as well as some from their new work “21st Century Breakdown”.  It will also feature a new song that Green Day has never released entitled “When It’s Time”.

“Green Day’s iconic album is one of the most brutally honest, eloquent, and poetically theatrical responses to the post 9/11 world that I have encountered,” Mayer said. “I hear in these amazing songs the frustration and anger and dreams of a lost generation of Americans. Collaborating with Billie Joe and the band has been a mind-blowing thrill from day one.”

The cast has even recorded a special version of “21 Guns” with Billy Joe Armstrong. They plan on shooting a video for it some time before the show opens.
