Advantages and Disadvantage of VOIP

I’ll bet you think I made a grammatical error in the title of this post, don’t you?  Well, I didn’t.

We’ve just switched over to VoIP and we absolutely love it.  In fact, while there are many advantages, I can really only think of one disadvantage of VoIP, but more on that in a moment.

Advantages of VoIP

So what are the advantages?  Well, you can get rid of your home phone company.  The costs are very cheap, in fact, you can make PC-to-PC calls for free.   You can also make your usual phone calls, and the monthly fee is much lower than it is with your phone company.

Another advantage of VoIP is portability. You can make and receive phone calls wherever there is a broadband connection simply by signing in to your account. This makes VoIP as convenient as e-mail – if you are travelling, simply pack a headset or Internet phone and you can talk to your family or business associates for almost nothing.

There are many other features that make VoIP attractive.  You get call forwarding, call waiting, voicemail, caller ID and three-way calling, just like with your traditional land line.

Disadvantage of VoIP

While there are many advantages, there is really just one disadvantage of VoIP that I can think of.

During a power outage, land line phones remain operational, but with VoIP, your phone will be out until the power comes back on.  That’s really the only down-side.

In the early days of VoIP, there used to be concerns about your phone number not displaying to the authorities when you called 911, but those issues have long since been resolved.
