Google Adsense (along with Adwords) has just introduced “expandable ads“.
These are basically ads that “expand” to a larger size when the user clicks on them. Google is only rolling this option out to Adsense publishers in North America and Europe presently.
The new ad units come in two models: CPM payment (payment per 1,000 views) and CPC (cost per click). The CPM pays regardless of whether the user clicks through on the ads but the CPC only pays on the click. Hmmm – wouldn’t having a preview of the site DECREASE the probabilityof a click-through?
Also, the only ways to “opt out” of this option are as follows:
1) Use the competitive ad filter (a pain in the neck in this case)
2) Use the Ad Review Center (way too time-consuming)
3) Use text ads only and NOT image ads
So what do you think? Will this result in a good experience for the end-user? Will this cut down on your Adsense earnings?
