Here’s something you don’t see every day. A British expat fled Dubai in 2011 and left his $1.6 million Ferrari Enzo behind.
Today, the abandoned Ferrari will go up for auction in what could potentially be the most expensive police sale in history.
Why would anyone abandon a Ferrari, you ask?
In Dubai, debt is a crime, so often times, debtors will flee the country to avoid jail time, leaving behind cars and other property.
Dubai’s traffic department director, Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zaffin, reports that this particular abandoned Ferrari Enzo was wanted by Interpol. It was left in a parking space twenty months ago after racking up too many parking tickets.
The Dubai government has the right to auction off any vehicle that’s been abandoned for more than six months. The auction itself will feature a grand total of 129 seized vehicles, 23 of which are luxury cars. They carry fines of around $27,000.
Some of the vehicles were abandoned due to these fines, others were left behind due to the debts of their owners, and still others were abandoned when their owners fled the scene after an accident.
A red Ferrari Enzo in good condition can go for $1.4M to $1.8M, but this one’s been left in the dust and sand, so who knows how much it will go for.
It’s a shame really. I certainly would have been happy to take it off their hands.
