In case you were wondering, kids are still having kids, unfortunately. A 9-year-old girl in Mexico gave birth to a baby girl on January 27, 2013 in the town of Jalisco, according to ABC News.
Both mom and baby are at home and doing fine, says Dr. Enrique Rabago, director of Zoquipan Hospital.
Local police are now searching for the baby’s 17-year-old father, who may face criminal charges for having a sexual relationship with the underage girl, who has only been identified as “Dafne.”
“Due to her young age, we don’t know if she is being entirely truthful,” said Lino Ginzalez Corona, a spokesperson with the Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office, who reportedly received from the girl an account of a “loving relationship.”
Corona added that the 17-year-old and Dafne were “dating,” but the girl wouldn’t divulge any other information about the father.
“She did not realize that she was pregnant until the seventh month,” said Corona.
The boyfriend apparently wanted young Dafne to move in with him so they could raise their baby together, but when she refused, he “decided to leave town two months ago,” added Corona.
The state’s prosecutor is said to be open to the possibility of rape or child sex abuse charges.
Dafne, one of 11 children, lives in Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos, a poor neighborhood 25 miles south of Guadalajara.
Her parents reportedly work all day and weren’t able to watch her, and therefore know about the relationship.
The girl had a C-Section at the time of the birth. “Due to her young age and to the fact that her body was not ready to give birth,” says Rabago, “the medical team decided a C-Section was the best option” for both mother and child.
