free shipping day 3 Things You Need to Know about Free Shipping Day 2009

Are you waiting until the last minute to do your Christmas shopping online?  Today is your day to get moving because December 17 is Free Shipping Day 2009.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • According to Luke Knowles, who organized the event, there are around 700 online merchants participating.  That’s more than double the number that participated last year. Those companies include: Aeropostale, American Eagle Outfitters, Apple Store, Borders, Kmart, JC Penney, Zappos, Toys R Us, Under Armour, Dell, Old Navy, Target, and J. Crew.
  • The specific deals will vary depending on the retailer.  Some offer free expedited delivery without any restrictions or based on a particular dollar amount spent. The required coupon codes have been posted on the official website.
  • In 2008, Free Shipping Day drew more than 250,000 visitors in the ten days leading up to the event, including more than 100,000 on the day itself.

A key reason the promotion has done so well is due to the fact that it encourages shoppers to keep buying closer to the actual Christmas holiday. Historically, online purchases drop drastically after December 12, Knowles said.

“One of the stories that is rarely told about Free Shipping Day is how it helps small online business owners,” Knowles said. “Any merchant is allowed to participate so long as they offer free shipping with delivery by Christmas Eve, and we don’t give better placement because a retailer might be more well known. This has lead to a lot of exposure that small businesses would never have received before.”

So go grab some of the best internet deals on the net, while you still can. You can also learn how to get free shipping through Amazon Prime here.
