Chicago is out. Rio de Janeiro is in.
The Brazilian city was chosen Friday afternoon to be the host of the 2016 Olympic Games, defeating Madrid in the final vote by the IOC. Chicago was eliminated in the first round in one of the most stunning upsets in IOC history. Tokyo was then given a KO in round two.
Madrid was miraculously able to make it to the final round once former IOC prez Juan Antonio Samaranch made an emotional appeal, telling IOC members that, at age 89, “I am very near the end of my time.”
Rio de Janeiro now becomes the first South American ever to play host to the Olympic Games. It’s also only the second country in the Southern Hemisphere to host, the other bring Australia, which has played host to two.
