UPDATE: Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Summer Olympics. Read details here.
In what has to be a shocking upset, Chicago has been eliminated from the first round of International Olympic Committee voting for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Tokyo, which was an underdog from the very beginning, was then eliminated in the second round.
That leaves only Madrid and Rio de Janeiro as future sites of the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Chicago’s elimination is one of the most stunning upsets in IOC voting history. The town had long been considered a “front-runner” and got an incredible level of support, from even President Barack Obama himself.
In downtown Chicago, throngs of people stood in shocked silence after watching the initial announcement. In Copenhagen, the broadcast was shown on giant TV screens in the Daley Center. Everyone was waiting to see Chicago get the nod.
An audible gasp could be heard washing over the crowd. People stood for a few moments just staring at the giant screen.
The winner should be chosen shortly so stay tuned. Video below. More when we have it.
