In a nail-biter of a finish, the 2009 Belmont Stakes results may surprise you. Summer Bird denied Calvin Borel of his Triple Crown bid by winning the race!
Kent Desormeaux, the jockey who was denied a victory at last year’s Belmont Stakes, attained redemption by riding Summer Bird to victory. Dunkirk finished in second place with Mine That Bird finishing in third.
With the crowd cheering wildly, Mine That Bird made a huge move and took the lead briefly. It was Summer Bird (11-1 odds), however, who pulled away for a 2 3/4-length victory.
“I thought I was home free,” Borel said, “but the other horses galloped by.”
