A 14-year-old eighth-grader in Fort Worth, Texas has died from H1N1 swine flu.
Chloe Lindsey’s father stated that his daughter, who died on Sunday, had no other underlying health issues. She ran track and played clarinet in the school band, he said.
“We want other parents to be aware…this happened so fast,” Tom Osborne said, fighting tears as he spoke outside his Benbrook home Monday evening. “She was so healthy. And it got her and got her so fast.”
Lindsey left school on Wednesday afternoon feeling “flushed,” Osborne said. On Thursday, she was running a fever of 103.8 and her mother, Tammy Osborne, told her she needed to stay home.
By Friday, Lindsey was congested and feeling much worse. Her parents took her to see her pediatrician, where she then tested positive for flu.
However, Chloe didn’t receive the antiviral medication Tamiflu as the doctors had stated that CDC guidelines recommend giving it only to those who are most at risk.
All other schools in the Huntsville Independent School District have been closed until Thursday due to students and staff being sick.
A statement issued on that school’s website states that all classes and extracurricular activities on Tuesday and Wednesday at the eight campuses (with about 6,300 students) have been canceled “due to a high rate of absences.”
Huntsville, with a population of about 37,000, is 60 miles north of Houston.
